Introduction/Background
Erica: Today, on discovering Magnolia, Texas, we are here at Hair Therapy. Let’s go in and talk to Kayla and see what they’re all about
Erica: Kayla, thank you so much for having us here today. I’m so excited to learn about your business here, so why don’t you tell us? How did you get into the salon business? Tell us a little bit about your background.
Kayla: When I was little, I used to get in trouble for cutting my Barbie’s hair and all my doll’s hair, so I feel like I knew when I grew up I was just going to be a hairdresser, and then, I guess, I kept messing with hair. I was always coloring my hair in high school and my friends’ hair. I didn’t know what I was doing, but you know, we did it, and then, in high school, I wrote myself a letter, and I actually received it 10 years later– Our teacher sent it to us, and it said, “I hope that I have a hair salon and that I hope that I live on Lake Conroe.” And clearly, I didn’t know how expensive Lake Conroe was. So I live in Montgomery by the lake, and I opened a hair salon by the time I was 30.
Erica: That’s amazing; isn’t that super cool to just see dreams that you may not have even realized were actually dreams, you know, come to fruition because who knows what’s going to happen in 10 years? Right, so are you from Magnolia?
Kayla: I lived out here my whole life, but I went to Tomball School. So, I guess I would say I’m from here because I know everyone here and I’m from the area.
Opening Hair Therapy
Erica: What brought you specifically back to Magnolia to open your hair salon?
Kayla: The people here are so nice, and since I grew up here, I obviously knew that I have a lot of families here, and I just have a lot of support here, like in the community.
Services and Offers
Erica: What are some of your favorite services that you provide here?
Kayla: My favorite is color and highlights, and I absolutely love doing that just because I love a good transformation, and I feel like I specialize in blonde and gray blending. We also do spray tanning and waxing here—I’m also taking a hair extension class, so I’m super excited about the start of offering hair extension services here because people keep asking me, so I’m like, “Might as well.”
Erica: But outside of just the services that you provide for hair, and you’re waxing another salon-type service, you also have a small boutique here too, don’t you?
Kayla: Yes, ma’am, I do sell Tyler candles and laundry detergent; it’s really popular and smells really good. I always have a few outfits. I love pajamas, so I always have cute pajamas here. I feel like every woman should have a cute matching pair of pajamas. –Jeans; Everybody likes the can-can jeans right now, so I carry those. and a lot of people come for jewelry and earrings.
Erica: It’s not just women that you serve here in your salon; you also do cuts and other services for men and children as well. Right?
Kayla: Yes, ma’am, we do a lot of children’s hair and a lot of men’s.
Schedule Appointments / Walk-in Details
Erica: So let’s talk a little bit more about that. When they want to come in for a service, do they need to schedule an appointment? Do you take walk-ins?
Kayla: Yes, I’m usually booked, but Jessica can take walk-ins, and we’re always open Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 to 5:30, and then Saturday, 9:30 to 2:00.
More About Hair Therapy
Erica: So you mentioned Jessica, so she’s also one of your employees.
Kayla: Yes, Jessica has been with me. I’m super excited for her. I love watching her grow.
Erica: So let’s talk a little bit about the name behind your business, “Hair Therapy.” Where did you come up with that?
Kayla: Everyone says that their hairdressers are therapists, and so I feel like I’m a therapist. I talk to people all day.
Supporting the Community
Erica: You know, another one of your tie-ins here with the community is supporting and giving back to the people who are coming in and supporting your business, and so I think you recently joined a club here in Magnolia.
Kayla: Yes, I recently joined the Lions Club. They invited me to join, so I was like, “Why not?” I looked into it, and I think it’s great for the community. I’ll be donating to SOS for the designer bag. Bingo! All the money that they raised from that goes to the school kids’ lunches in the summer for Magnolia ISD. I also work with a lot of schools and donate a lot of services, boutique baskets, and things like that.

Erica: Kayla, where are you located? Where can people find you?
